Tip of the Week

Water, Water Everywhere
Not only does water aid in digestion, in washing away toxins, in reducing appetite, in hydrating the skin, it can help prevent bladder cancer in men. A 10-year study of 48,000 men at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston found that those who drank six glasses of water a day had only half the risk of developing bladder cancer as those who drank only one glass. Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer among American men, eighth among US women.

Question of the Week

Question: Please, could you help me find information on losing weight? I want to lose my beer belly but don't know how to start. Do I have to give up drinking or can I do it by cutting down? I also need help on what type of exercises I should be doing. I have thought of doing abdominal curls but I don't know if this is the right way to lose weight in my belly.

Could you give me a few tips about losing weight and where to start and what exercises I need to do? If you can direct me to a particular web page please give me the address. Also could you tell me what foods I should eat? I am a student and usually eat fast food like burgers and chips. Thank you for your time and help.

Answer: There is an erroneous notion that men with large stomachs are beer drinkers. Not necessarily. The belly is where most men store their fat. When they take in excess calories, whether in beer or any other kinds of foods, the excess is stored as fat. Losing a "beer belly" involves a change in diet and increase in exercise. There are no shortcuts.

Abdominal exercises are good but they will not make your stomach flat if a layer of excess fat covers it. Those washboard abs will only appear if you lose the fat so ab exercises alone will not solve the problem. Read more about this here.

You asked about eating frequently in fast food restaurants. Specifically, most fast food restaurant food is high in fat and calories. But most have low fat, heart healthy choices. For example, McDonald's has salads with low cal dressing; Subway makes sub sandwiches containing less than 6 grams of fat as well as some very low calorie salad choices; Burger King will usually make a broiled chicken salad for you even if it's not on the menu; Wendy's sells salads with light dressing and broiled chicken; Boston Market offers skinless rotisserie turkey breast and low fat vegetable choices and boiled potatoes; Arby's junior roast beef sandwich and chicken fingers are both lower fat, lower calorie choices; Blimpie's features a turkey sub and a grilled chicken salad; Chick-fil-A makes a hearty low fat breast of chicken soup and a raisin and carrot salad; even Dunkin' Donuts offer low fat muffins. No, you do not have to totally give up drinking beer. Remember, moderation is the key. Allow yourself a few beers a week. Don't make it a daily habit.

Sincerely,

The HFT Staff
