The Link Between
Gum Disease and Heart Disease
Watch your mouth. Recent studies have concluded that for a person
with periodontal disease (soft, bleeding gums caused by plaque and
bacterial infections,) the risk of heart disease is two to three
times greater than for people with healthy teeth and gums. Poor
dental hygiene leads to gum disease as well as smoking. There have
also been links between gum disease and the birth control pill.
Scientists have not yet formed the cause and effect link but some
theories are that the bacteria that attacks the gums also attacks
the heart muscles. More recently, scientists speculate that the
plaque that forms on the teeth breaks off in tiny particles, goes
into the blood stream and attaches to the arterial walls, causing
blockages of blood flow to the heart. Regardless of cause and
effect, the connection is too close to take a chance. So start
brushing and flossing two or three times daily. Rinse out your
mouth after meals if you have no access to a toothbrush (such as
eating out in restaurants.) And don't smoke.

Question of the
Week
Question:
I am 16 years old and am in a private boarding school. Because
we have a structured schedule that leaves me no time to exercise,
I am gaining weight. Also, I am on the school meal program and
don't seem to be able to eat healthy foods like fruits and
vegetables. Can you help me find ways to stay fit and healthy in
my present situation?
Answer:
The
first thing we suggest is that you speak to someone in charge at
your school about the need to add fruits and vegetables and
healthy snacks to the food program. Most school meals do offer
healthy choices although they may be hard to pick out if
surrounded by tempting fatty foods. Look for fruits and vegetables
without sauces and whole grain cereals and breads. Arrange to
special order these foods for you if that is feasible. If you
don't feel comfortable speaking to a person in authority, perhaps
you could speak to a counselor, friendly teacher or clergyman.
Tell them your problem and ask if they could help. Teens
especially need healthy choices available to them, as fast and
fatty foods are so tempting.
Exercise is another important component of fitness and good
health. It seems hard to believe in this age of fitness
enlightenment that your school does not provide some way to
exercise, either in a group setting or a gym. Even prisons have
fitness programs for inmates. If there are no fitness facilities,
you need to work out a schedule that will allow you time to walk
briskly for 30 to 45 minutes a day. Again, you need to speak out
about this in a tactful way.
If this does not produce results, our second suggestion is to
speak to your parents or guardians about the situation and let
them step in. If all else fails, you need to change schools. Check
our home page for more tips on exercise and weight loss. Let us
know how you're doing. Good luck.
