Human Growth
Hormone: Fountain of Youth or Bucket of Bunk?
Beware of the latest trend of injecting human growth hormone (hGH)
to increase virility, develop more muscle or decrease effects of
aging. Some fitness buffs are using it to "bulk up" to
compete in fitness and strength competitions. Aging stars seek its
youth-producing aura. Prosperous seniors (it's expensive) are
injecting it for smoother skin and ageless energy.
Claims for hGH, a synthetic copy of a hormone produced naturally
by the body's pituitary gland, range from "anti-aging
miracle" to "fat-burning muscle-building elixir."
The facts remain. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved
the drug in 1985 strictly for medical treatment of pituitary gland
malfunctioning. It still has not approved hGH for any other
purpose, including anti-aging. So the jury is still out. Until
conclusive studies have been done, we still do not know the
potential long range side effects of injecting the drug or
possible dangers of doing so.

Question of the
Week
Question:I
have a 13-year old daughter. She is my precious child and I love
her so much. I worry and do not know what to do. The fact is she
weighs 198 pounds & stands 5 feet 5 inches high. She actually
understands the situation but I
cannot push her too hard in order for her to lose weight, as I
know I would hurt her feelings. In addition, she still acts like a
child and does not even pay attention to her size. I really would
like to help my daughter now before it is too late for her. Please
help and kindly give me advice on how to explain things to her
without hurting her feelings.
Answer:
We're really not psychologists but we can suggest some methods
that have worked for some of our readers. Though you cannot force
your child to want to lose weight, you can encourage her subtly
through example. By eating
healthfully yourself, you set the example. By stocking the
refrigerator with healthy snacks like fresh fruit, low fat yogurt,
whole grain bread, sugarless jam and fresh veggies, she has the
opportunity to pick healthy options.
A nutritionist can also be helpful. Most are trained in
motivational methods to encourage healthy eating. A one-on-one
consultation with a nutritionist (make sure she or he is a
Registered Dietician) can be very helpful and enlightening for
your daughter. We suggest you provide transportation but let her
see the nutritionist on her own. Unless she invites you to join
her, it's best to stay out of it. If she enlists your help, all
the better. Let it be her choice. You might point out to her,
however, that since you do the grocery shopping, she may want to
share with you what she's learned. Also, let her read our weekly
healthy recipes.
Exercise or being active is also very important for a teenager.
Lead her through example by taking long walks together. Start with
short ones if she is unaccustomed to exercise. Encourage her to
get active in a sport, fitness class or after-school athletic
event. Go swimming, bowling, golfing
together. Let her take up tennis. Roller blading can be fun for
her. Maybe she can enlist a friend to join her. The buddy system
works great for exercise, especially with teenagers.
Whatever you do, don't nag her about her weight or make her feel
guilty if she eats the "wrong foods." Remember, lead by
example and create healthy opportunities for her.
Check out our home page for more detailed lists of healthy snacks,
food, exercise, and weight loss. Good luck. Let us know how you
are doing.
