Rev Up the
Metabolism by Alternating Speed and Intensity in Aerobic Workouts
Doing the same workout routine can get to be a habit. Not only
should you alternate your routine to prevent burnout or boredom,
but to give your body a surprise jolt. If you normally walk at 4.0
miles per hour on the treadmill or take 20-minutes to walk a mile,
change up by going 5.0 miles for just 30 to 60 seconds during your
workout. Do this every five minutes or so. Each time you workout,
increase the time of the faster speed in small increments. This
will rev up your metabolism without being overly taxing. It's the
painless way to increase speed and intensity. You can work up to
that higher level in a matter of weeks.
Question of the
Week
Question:I
have a friend who says that if you don't eat breakfast, lunch, or
dinner your metabolism will get out of whack. My friend claims
I'll gain a lot more weight next time I pig out. They also say
that if I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and then pig out, that I
wouldn't gain as much. Is this true?
Answer:
Yes and no. Skipping meals is not good as it does play havoc with
metabolism. Without going into great scientific, biomedical
explanations, let's just say eating is like stoking the fire. It
gets the metabolism going. That's why eating three to five small
meals a day is far healthier than not eating all day and then
gorging at dinner or overeating at any meal.
Remember, the operative word here is SMALL. It's never a good idea
to overeat. If you skip meals and then pig out, you're going to
slow the metabolism down from skipping meals and you are going to
absorb the excess calories from 'pigging out." If you eat
breakfast, lunch and dinner and then "pig out" the same
amount, you are going to absorb more excess calories, even if your
metabolism has been stoked. Small low-fat meals stoke the fire.
You've heard the expression, "adding fuel to the fire."
Overeating is like overkill. It ruins the effects of stoking the
fire.
As an added fact, breakfast seems to be one of the most important
meals of the day, not only for providing energy to start the day,
but for weight control. Studies have shown that the large majority
of overweight people also skip breakfast.
