Tip of the Week
Generic Drugs are almost
identical to brand names and they are cheaper. Though buying them
can reduce your medication cost by 30 to 50 percent, taking them
can be harmful in certain cases.
Generic and brand name drugs are not always interchangeable. For
most drugs, a slight variation in the amount your body absorbs
isn't critical. But for some, small variations in blood levels of
the drug alter its effectiveness. Switching to a generic or even
to a different brand may be counterindicated. Be sure and ask your
physician and pharmacist whether a generic drug is available and
suitable for you.
Question of the
Week
Question: Could
I ask your opinion on Low Carbohydrate diets? What type of food is
advised if this is to work?
Answer: We
do not recommend inordinately low carbohydrate diets such as some
that are presently regaining popularity. The body needs complex
carbohydrates. You'd have to give up everything from grain-based
foods such as breads and cereals to fruits, veggies and milk.
Cutting down too much on those foods will severely limit the
nutrition quality of your diet. Carbohydrates are major sources of
vitamins and minerals as well as other health-promoting nutrients.
Simple carbohydrates, however, such as processed foods, flour,
sugar and sweets could be eliminated from your diet for a
healthier you.
Check out our home page for more detailed lists of healthy snacks,
food, exercise, and weight loss. Good luck. Let us know how you
are doing.
