Tip of the Week
Vitamins E and
C May Lower Risk of Life-threatening Complication of Pregnancy
According to results of a recent study reported in Lancet,
pregnant women at high risk for pre-eclampsia who took 400
International Units (IU) a day of vitamin E, and 1,000 mg of
vitamin C, lowered their risk of getting the life-threatening
complication by 75%.

Question of the
Week
Question: I
am 16 years old and have been weightlifting on and off for a year
now, not getting results of any kind. I am always changing my
routine, trying to find something that will work for me. At 15 I
thought I was too young to really see results but now getting
closer to 17, I know that's not the
problem.
I have had people tell me that I try to do too much and tire my
self out. Other people suggest that maybe I'm not pushing myself
hard enough. I see all these beginner routines in magazines and
they all seem to say something
different.
A couple of magazines say when you're a beginner you should use as
much weight as possible and add more weight each week. Also they
say a beginner should see impressive gains in the first few
months. I don't understand. I could never add more weight each
week if I'm pushing myself as much as possible.
I am not overweight. I would like to lose a little bit of body fat
but my main goal is to add strength and size. I am currently
working out three days a week. If you give me a routine to do,
should I start right up with it or take a couple of days off
before starting up a new routine?
The bottom line is I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm willing
to do whatever it takes but for the last time I want to start a
new routine that I can stick with and be confident that it will
get results. I don't care if I have to push myself as hard as I
can or go on a strict diet or whatever. Thank you again ahead of
time for any Information you can provide me with.
Answer:
If you
do the same routine over and over, you're going to get the same
results. I suggest you change your routine on a weekly basis. Not
only does this keep you interested and challenged, it helps
develop different muscles. There is no need to take days off
before starting a new routine. Just do not exercise the same group
of muscles within a 24-hour period. I assume you are doing both
upper body and lower body workouts. Alternate them so your muscles
rest for 24 to 48 hours between re-working the same ones. I
suggest you increase your workouts from three days a week to five
until you begin to see results.
You mentioned that you have some body fat. Maybe this is why you
are not actually seeing the muscle development. If muscles are
covered with a layer or more of fat, they are not visible to the
naked eye. You did not mention if your strength has increased. You
did not say if you are male or female.
If you have noticed you are able to lift heavier weights, you are
getting results. If you are a female, your muscle development will
not be as visible.
While we can suggest several different exercises for different
muscles, I think you need to consult with a personal trainer. For
someone who has been working out as long as you say you have, it's
unusual not to see some results. It's worth the one-time fee to
get set on the right track. Check out the information on diet and
exercise on our home page. Keep reading our free weekly tips too.
In a nutshell, it sounds like you need to change both your diet
and exercise.
Sincerely,
The HFT Staff
