Tip of the Week
MAKE SURE YOUR BREATH IS 'KISSING SWEET'
Halitosis or bad breath is the dreaded disease that can kill a relationship. It also can indicate a physical problem such as respiratory tract or gastrointestinal disorders but medical causes of bad breath are rare.
The sale of products advertising "kissing sweet" breath is a multimillion dollar industry in this country. And for good reason. No one wants bad breath.
The truth is that these products such as mouth wash, gum, sprays and mints are generally only temporary. More effective ways to curb bad breath is simply rinsing your mouth out with water after you eat if a toothbrush is unavailable. Doing both is better. Add flossing and you fight the dreaded dinosaur breath even more.
The biggest cause of bad breath is sleeping. Saliva does not flow while we sleep. It tends to stagnate and pool with food particles in the mouth. Almost nobody wakes up with sweet breath. What's the first thing we usually do when we awake? Brush our teeth because the taste in our mouth is unpleasant.
Daytime causes of temporary bad breath are mostly caused by foods we eat such as raw onions, garlic, cigarettes and alcohol. These can be temporarily masked with mouthwashes and mints. Persistent bad breath can be a signal that something is amiss. Periodontal disease is a major cause of chronic bad breath.
To keep "kissing sweet" breath, brush and floss after each meal and see your dentist regularly. If halitosis persists, run, don't walk to your nearest dentist and/or
doctor.

Question of the
Week
Question:
I'm 17 years old and I would like to know what my target weight is. I weigh about 130 lbs, but I lift weights and everyone says that my weight is ok. So I want to know if I should go on a diet, or what other exercises I should do?
Answer: It sounds like you are experiencing teenage angst about your weight. One must consider many factors in determining a good weight. Your personal best is usually determined by you! How your clothes fit is usually a good clue. Unfortunately, many ads in fashion magazines featuring "rail-thin" models have today's youth hankering after thinness
and nauseum. Movies and television featuring super slim women seem to play up the "thin is in" mentality.
You must consider height, body type, bone type (small, medium or large-boned), heredity and fitness. It is true that muscle weighs more than fat so many weight lifters weigh more than their non weight lifting brethren but not to the point of being overweight. It is also true that genetics plays a roll but that can be reversed with healthy living. Just because your parent or parents are fat or your great grandmother weighed 300 pounds is no excuse. You can control your own destiny with exercise and diet.
You sound like you think you should weigh less than 130 lbs. We cannot recommend a diet unless we know those other "weight-bearing" factors mentioned above. We certainly are not recommending being overweight but neither do we like people, especially young women, to try to become too thin. All kinds of eating disorders can develop from that attitude.
If you want to lose weight and increase fitness, continue strength training and add aerobic activity (bike, treadmill, stair stepper, power walking, jogging, lap swimming etc.) to your routine. To maintain a healthy diet, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and protein. Cut down on fatty foods, processed foods and sweets.
Check our Health & Fitness Home Page for more health tips on exercise and weight loss and just plain healthy living. And let us know how you're doing. Good luck.
