Tip of the Week
Most Common Type of Skin Cancer: How to Avoid it; How to Screen for Symptoms.
We all know now how to ward off skin cancers by escaping ultraviolet radiation from excess sun. The most common and curable type of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma, so called because it starts from cells at the base of the skin's outer layer. White people, especially fair-skinned, blue-eyed blondes are most susceptible. Also, people in warm climates are more likely to develop it due to the proximity to the equator. It's important to start applying sunscreen to very young babies and children as well as adults who are exposed to the sun. When spending time in the sun for long periods, it is imperative to re-apply sunscreen frequently (about every 30 minutes,) no matter how high the SPF factor.
Three Warning Signs of Basal Cell Carcinoma:
1. An open sore that does not heal
2. A shiny, lumpy spot or nodule that is white or pinkish to red.
3. An irritated area that is rough and itchy and forms a crust.

Question of the
Week
Question:
I have a peptic ulcer and cannot eat fruits and salads. The doctor said I have to lose 30 lbs. I am 5"7 and went up to 190 lbs. I always was 135-140 lbs. Can you suggest a diet that's right for me?
Answer:
In recent years, medical studies have shown that diet has little influence on ulcers of any type. While you should test out any foods that may cause intestinal discomfort, most foods do not affect peptic ulcers. The latest findings are that ulcers are caused by an infection and antibiotics are the treatment of choice.
No more bland, soft diet; no more tasteless, spiceless meals. In fact, vegetables and fruits are recommended for the fiber content that is found to actually help ulcers. If fresh produce irritates your stomach, try stewed, canned fruits and cooked fruits such as baked apples, sugarless applesauce, stewed prunes, canned grapefruit and orange sections and poached pears. Cooked vegetables can be of the frozen variety or boiled carrots, broiled tomatoes, baked potatoes and braised celery. Many foods are available for ulcer patients who want low-fat healthy diets. You can puree apples, bananas or pears in the blender with a teaspoon of sugar and a cup of skim milk and crushed ice and a dash of vanilla. Presto! You have a nutritious low-fat fruit smoothie.
Be creative about your diet to include low-fat, low-calorie foods that do not irritate your stomach. Substitute low-fat cottage cheese for potato and vegetable toppings; use applesauce instead of oil in recipes and broil meats and fish instead of pan-frying. Remove skin first from turkey and chicken. Trim all fat from beef, pork and lamb. Use fat-free cheeses and low-fat cereals and yogurts for snacks. Reduce portion sizes to one third less and pep up your life with exercise and strength training. It will help burn calories, tone muscles and rid the body of toxins.
