Tip of the Week

Water Works for Weight Loss

Nothing quells the appetite like water, lots and lots of water. Start out with two quart bottles in the morning and carry one with you to work or wherever you go. If you like, divvy up the 64 ounces of water into eight (8-ounce) bottles or four pint (16-ounce) bottles to carry around with you all day. Freeze half of them the night before and they will last all day, even in a hot car. Keep some unfrozen so they will be ready to drink immediately.

Yes. You will have to make more frequent john trips, but it is worth it. Drink your 64 ounces of water before dinner, if possible, so you're not up half the night going to the bathroom.

Water not only fills you up and lessens your appetite, it prevents those "hungry horrors" we all encounter when our blood sugar drops and we reach for cookies, candy, ice cream, fries or other high-calorie treats. Water also flushes out the system, rids the body of bloat and toxins and rosies up the complexion. Now, start splashing.

Question of the Week

Question:
I have a lot of fat on my cheeks, which makes me look kiddish. Otherwise, I have a proper slim figure. I am 18-years old. Could you please suggest some remedy or exercises as to how I can reduce my chubby cheeks? Whenever I put on weight, it only shows on my cheeks.

Answer:
Everybody seems to have one Achilles Heel or spot where fat likes to go. Most people get it on the lower cheeks. You have a unique problem but one that is not unsolvable. Since you do not need to lose weight, we won't recommend a diet or exercise regime although healthy eating and exercise are key components to fitness for everybody. So we hope you are doing both.

Plastic surgeons generally believe that facial exercises are bogus as far as changing the contour of the face or reducing wrinkles. Make-up, however, can be your salvation. Many of the movie stars and celebrities use make up to hide facial flaws.

Applying a darker foundation along the jaw line and side of the face just behind the cheekbones and in front of the ears, all the way down to the neck, can give the appearance of a slimmer face. Remember to blend well with a damp makeup sponge or cotton ball or you'll have a line showing. Dark colors reduce and light colors bring out. So highlight your cheekbones with a very light foundation or shimmery powder to emphasize that part of the face and use the dark foundation or powder to contour. You can also buy cover foundation that is sold in beauty supply places. This is generally used to cover scars, acne and surgical marks.

Emphasize your other features also such as your eyes. Use eyeliner to outline your upper lids just above the lashes; use a dark eye shadow to reduce any puffiness around the upper eyelid. Mascara and lower-lid liners also add emphasis to the eyes. By focusing on your other facial features, you will draw attention away from your chubby cheeks.

Also, drink lots of water to flush out your system and to reduce any bloat that may show in the face. And remember this, some day you will thank your lucky stars that you have cheeks that give you a younger look.

The Method: Dance to Fitness Video (1999)

This dance class on video performed to live drums is similar to an aerobics class in that you elevate your heart rate with movements done to music. Two different low impact, firming and toning dance-based workouts to release the dancer in you. The first emphasizes body rhythm and dynamics, led by Jennifer Kries. The second is a continuously flowing workout of modern and jazz dance movements, led by Lisa Wheeler. The goal of both is to increase physical strength, endurance, flexibility, and lengthening of the body. Strengthen and lengthen your body's major muscles without weights or exercise machines.
