Tip of the Week

Cool Your Jets!

You should always make it a point to end your exercise sessions with a low-intensity activity such as 5-10 minutes of stretching or easy walking. This will help to bring your system back to its pre-exercise state. Try to avoid collapsing on the couch or into your favorite chair.

Question of the Week

Question: Could you explain the phrase you used in your last answer to 'Question of the Week?' "If you take in more calories than you work off, the excess is stored as fat." Do you mean if you eat 2,000 calories and burn 1,500, the extra 500 calories is stored? Or what?

Answer:  If you take in more calories than the body uses, including what is worked off in exercise, then the excess is stored as fat. The body utilizes calories just as an engine utilizes gas. Fortunately for the car, excess gasoline just rolls out of the tank if you attempt to overfill it. Unfortunately for us, we can overfill our bodies with calories and it just makes us fat. That's why reducing the number of calories we take in and increasing exercise is the best approach to weight loss.

Using your example, if you take in 2,000 calories on a given day and your body uses 1,000,for all bodily function just to stay alive (breathing, moving, sleeping, sitting, digesting food, replacing cells, building muscle etc.), then you store the other 1,000 as fat. If you reduce your calories to 1,500 and exercise 500 calories worth (about one hour of running or heavy aerobics), then you use up the excess and nothing is stored as fat. If you cut calories more and/or exercise more, you can then start burning the fat stores you already have accumulated in the past.

One-foot note to this is that while exercise tones muscle, revs up metabolism and increases fitness, it does not burn as many calories as people might think. The real key to weight loss is diet.

Sincerely,

The HFT Staff
