Question of the
Week
Question:
I'm 28 years old and I just had my cholesterol tested with my doctor and my results were high. (HDL 260+ and the LDL 190). Needless to say, it runs in the family with ALL the males on my father's side along with Heart Disease. What kind of recipes should I be looking at and what kind of intake of cholesterol and sodium should I have per meal? I have the cookbooks, but my dad says that the intake of sodium shouldn't be any higher that 60 mg. In all the books I have, I can't find a
handful of recipes that meet this standard. Can you help me out or point me in the right direction? I hope you can help, thanks!
Answer:
High cholesterol can run in families and that certainly seems to be a factor in yours. But it also can be monitored and lowered through diet and exercise. At this point, unless you have high blood pressure as well, don't worry about sodium intake too much. Concentrate on reducing FAT in your diet. Fat is the culprit with high cholesterol. Fat turns into cholesterol in the body and so do excess calories. In addition, the body manufactures its own cholesterol, which doesn't help.
You don't have to make a complicated science out of your diet by counting each gram of fat and/or cholesterol. Keep it simple. You can reduce fat in your diet dramatically by increasing intake of vegetables, fruits and natural whole grains and eliminating fried foods, processed foods, eggs and bakery goods as well as fatty sauces, butter, mayonnaise and gravies. Reduce alcohol intake as it raises triglycerides, thought by some doctors to be more influential in heart disease than cholesterol. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. This will also help neutralize any extra sodium you may take in. Eat five small meals a day rather than three large ones. Exercise can include fast walking, biking, cardio-vascular machines, swimming and strength training. By all means, consult a medical specialist as your levels are high, considering the current good cholesterol level is considered to be below 200 and triglycerides, 100. Your doctor may deem it necessary to place you on cholesterol-lowering medication. For a strict diet, check out Nathan Pritikin and Dean Ornish, both medically designed diets for heart health.
