Tip of the Week

Take Your Vitamin E Supplement Even if You Think You Don't Need it.

Recent research concludes that antioxidants such as vitamin E may indeed be protection against free radicals that contribute to diseases such as cancer and even arthritis. Exact RDA's are still in contention but it's safe to take 400 International Units daily.

Question of the Week

Question:
My son is eight years old and participates on a wrestling team. He shows an interest in going with me to the health club. I'm wondering if it would be helpful or detrimental to get him started with some simple exercise machines. I'm not looking to make him a mini body builder, but I'm wondering if using a little weight might make him a little stronger.

Answer:
Weight training and other sports training for children is and has been a controversial question. Interestingly enough, a new study from Denmark has been reported in the November 2000 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. The bottom line results are that rigorous training in children as young as nine years old does not delay childhood development. The research team, led by Rasmus Damsgaard, University of Copenhagen, evaluated 96 girls and 88 boys aged nine through thirteen. All were in training for competitive sports. Vital statistics were recorded along with weekly training hours per week. The 184 youngsters were examined by pediatricians before and after training according to a strict medical model and extensive follow-up.

The conclusion reported is that early training does not "stunt growth" or harm physical development of children in this age group. What does effect their physical maturation are such pre-training conditions as heredity, constitution, birth weight and parents' physical characteristics including height and weight. A detailed research report can be obtained from the American College of Sports Medicine's public information department Online at www.acsm.org

:08 Minute Abs with free :08 Minute Arms

"Ever since I bought the :08 minute collection, it has been my favorite workout routine. The videos are very upbeat and focused. And I can look forward to them because I know they're only 8 minutes long. After trying many other video workouts where I could barely keep up, these were a pleasant surprise. Jaime Brenkus has the right idea by keeping the workouts short and concentrated."
