Tip of the Week
TEAMWORK
Many people have a hard time dedicating themselves to a routine
exercise program. Find a workout partner or join a local sports
team. You will soon see that it is much easier to be disciplined
when you have others who are counting on you to stick with the
program.
Question of the
Week
Question:
What can I do to lose my love handles? I just began a workout
program. My job requres me to sit behind a computer all day. I
have cut down on my fat and carbohydrate intake and have increased
my protein consumption.
Answer:
There
are a couple of things that must be considered when it comes to
the "love handles". First, you must have fat in order to
lose fat. Men sometimes have muscular definition that can be
mistaken as love handles, when acutally they aren't. Doing
twisting abdominal crunches can help tone that area if this is the
problem.
Secondly, The first fat gained is usually the last to go and the
hardest to get rid of. Doing aerobic exercise, such as running,
cycling, or walking on the treadmill, is the best way to lose any
fat. You should combine this with weight-training to gain muscle
and raise your metabolism. Try working up to 3-5 days a week of
aerobic exercise (30 to 45 minutes). If you're just starting, you
should start with 20 minutes about 3 times a week, then very
slowly, begin adding minutes.
Regarding your diet, don't cut back to much on carbs, as they are
your energy source. A balance of 65-70% carbs, 20-30% fat, and
10-15% protein is best. Generally 1 - 1.2 grams of protein per
kilogram of bodyweight is best. Multiply your pounds by 2.2 to get
kg. Any more protein than than this is wasted.
Check our Health & Fitness Home Page for more specific tips on
exercise and weight loss. And let us know how you're doing. Good
luck.
