Tip of the Week
Up with the Good
Fat, Down with the Bad
Omega-3 Fatty Acids are the Good Guys in the Fat Pool. To up your
good cholesterol, down the bad cholesterol, and reduce the risk of
heart disease, include Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Foods
containing these heart-healthy fatty acids are fatty fish such as
salmon, sardines, sword fish and albacore tuna. For vegetarians,
the best way to get stroke-busting fatty acids is to cook with
flaxseed oil and flaxseed flour.
Question of the
Week
Question:
I'm a college Track athlete down in Miami Florida and according to
books I've read I'm not in my weight range. Even before I
researched it I've been trying to gain weight but I've never been
successful. I'd like to find a way to gain weight a natural way. I
don't want to take supplements or anything of the sort.
Answer:
Gaining
weight can be even more difficult than losing weight.
Surprisingly, you go about it in a similar way. You increase
fruits, vegetables and grains in your diet and eliminate junk
food. Add two or three small meals to your daily three squares. We
suggest natural snacks such as whole milk shaken with crushed ice
and a banana for a refreshing healthful treat, nuts such as
walnuts, pecans and unsalted peanuts, protein treats such as
chicken breasts, turkey rolled in bread, cheese and peanut butter
on whole wheat bread.
Competitive runners such as yourself tend to be long and lean and
sometimes wiry. Running is a major calorie burner. Balancing your
aerobic exercise with strength training will help add muscle to
your frame, giving you not only some extra weight, but a more
solid appearance.
Check our Health & Fitness Home Page for more specific tips on
exercise and weight loss. And let us know how you're doing. Good
luck.
Sincerely,
The HFT Staff
